Virtual Try-On Technology: Context-Aware Makeup Assistance

Adeia, a pioneer in virtual try-on technology, is innovating the next wave of personalized context-aware assistance. Virtual try-on technology to date helps guide consumers during the purchasing process and product discovery. The next frontier is helping consumers get the most from products they own -- after the point of purchase. Adeia's technology moves beyond virtual try-on by helping consumers decide not only how a product may look, but how, when, and where to use what they’ve purchased based on the real-world conditions they expect to encounter.

Beyond Virtual Try-On: Beauty Assistance After Purchas

Adeia is offering one of the first instances of this kind of context-aware assistive technology, which we have focused on cosmetics and personalized beauty. App developers can adopt our core horizontal Adeia Computer Vision technology to show consumers how their makeup will look when they get to where they’re going – not in the environment they happen to be in when applying makeup, but in a specific location in the real world under real-world lighting conditions.

Plan Your Makeup Across the Day’s Events

Adeia's technology can go beyond showing consumers how their existing makeup will appear under different conditions. It can analyze multiple events and environments expected throughout a consumer's day and recommend how to use their cosmetics to achieve the best overall result. A consumer might have a morning commute, an office meeting, lunch outdoors, and an important evening event. It is even possible to tie into users’ calendars (with appropriate user permission). There is no restriction on the number of venues that can be taken into consideration.

The technology can then evaluate different makeup choices across the lighting and conditions expected for each event and its venue, give greater weight to events that matter most to the consumer, and recommend a makeup application that performs well across the day.

Get Timely Recommendations for Touch-Ups

Recommendations can evolve throughout the day. The system can consider factors including elapsed time, environmental conditions, lighting, activity and observed changes in makeup appearance and recommend whether, when and how a consumer should adjust or reapply makeup. The technology can analyze how makeup is actually performing, identify effects such as fading, shine, smudging, or changes in appearance under different lighting, and recommend when and how the consumer should make a touch up.

When it comes time to reapply cosmetics, the places that venues set aside for refreshing makeup commonly have different real-world lighting conditions from anywhere else in that venue. Instead, users can open their context-aware cosmetics app based on Adeia technology and simply pull up a simulation of the venue on their phones and adjust their makeup accordingly.

Our technology makes it possible to consider the specific makeup that consumers actually own. It takes into account the specific colors and other physical properties of different types of makeup from different cosmetics companies.

This all turns context-aware beauty technology from a preview tool into an ongoing personalized assistant for using cosmetics after purchase.

There is tremendous value in helping consumers prepare for predicted and real-time conditions, but by opening such an app onsite, our location-aware technology makes it possible to detect where the user is, capture real-time lighting conditions, and dynamically adjust makeup recommendations accordingly.

The Opportunity for Context-Aware Beauty Apps

The economic opportunity for app developers in personalized beauty technologies to support consumers appears to be substantial. The cosmetics industry is projected to achieve global revenue of nearly $387 billion in 2026, underscoring the opportunity for beauty technology innovation. While the high-tech press barely pays attention to this market, electronics companies know the cosmetics industry and its customers are eager for technological innovation.

“Personalized beauty is becoming a major industry trend, with approximately 35% of cosmetic companies developing products based on individual skin types, hair conditions, and consumer preferences,” according to Business Research Insights. “Artificial intelligence-based beauty recommendations, customized skincare formulations, and digital consultation tools are gaining adoption among younger consumers.”

This trend toward personalized beauty creates an opportunity to extend recommendations beyond individual preferences to include real-world context including location, lighting, and environmental conditions.

The demand for personalized context-aware recommendation capabilities for cosmetics is quickly developing, and the technological prerequisites are already in place. The basic data necessary to simulate conditions in most public venues including location, lighting, and environmental data can be gleaned from public sources (venue web sites, social media sites, etc.). It is possible, even likely, that some venues will volunteer this information.

Makeup apps based on Adeia technology can easily tie into imaging and facial-analysis capabilities commonly incorporated in smartphones.

Extend Context-Aware Recommendations Beyond Cosmetics

The potential interest in personalized context-aware recommendations is by no means restricted to cosmetics. Adeia is pursuing similar capabilities across additional consumer product categories as well. App developers interested in exploring virtual try-on, context-aware recommendations, and personalized beauty technology are encouraged to contact us to find out how Adeia technology can work for you.
