The 2024 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), one of the most significant events in the field of computer vision, was held in June in Seattle, WA. This prestigious conference brings together leading researchers, academics and industry professionals to discuss the latest innovations in computer vision and pattern recognition. Adeia participated in this year’s IEEE CVPR, showcasing our cutting-edge clickable video technology alongside industry leaders such as AMD, Amazon, Apple, Google, Hyundai, LG, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix and Sony.

Technology Highlight: Clickable Video

Adeia’s clickable video technology is a significant advancement in the intersection of video content and e-commerce. This invention utilizes sophisticated object detection and computer vision algorithms to identify and track objects within video content. It enables viewers to click on objects within streaming content using a touch screen, mouse or remote control to access product details, purchase options and related information. 

When objects in the video are eligible for purchase, clicking one of such objects will indicate the product and purchase information in a pop-up display within the video. When users click outside of these objects, “halos” will indicate which objects can be clickable.

Other methods of enabling object interactivity in videos is embedding of invisible watermarks, which can be recorded with the video.   The watermarks are decoded into an URL which directs the users to the original clickable video.  This bridges an existing gap between online and offline commerce since the invisible watermark can be received by simply capturing an image.

Our clickable video invention offers a transformative solution for e-commerce, making online shopping faster, easier, and more engaging. By seamlessly integrating retail opportunities within native video content, clickable objects enhance the user experience and provides retailers with a powerful tool for driving sales.

Here’s how our technology works:

  • When a user clicks on a clickable object, an overlay will be displayed with details about the product, such as price and purchasing options. 
  • The clickable video technology integrates objects to a back-end database that houses associated information to enable dynamic, real-time updates to product details. 
  • The database can contain pictures of products, their descriptions, and pricing information.
  • E-commerce providers can participate in this market by making their product and pricing information available to viewers.

Toshiro Ozawa is a Director of Advanced R&D with Adeia. He is highly experienced in developing audio and video delivery solutions, with a strong background in digital television broadcast, Linux and embedded systems. He has over 20 years of experience as an R&D engineer, working for Sony, Samsung, Thales and Xumo, and extensive knowledge of digital cable and satellite TV systems, OTT media services and IP streaming over various codec and streaming protocols. Toshiro holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Waseda University in Tokyo. He has 15 granted US patents.
