Immersive Content, XR and the Cloud

Since the latest wave of Virtual Reality (VR) devices, immersive content leveraging the capabilities of these devices has been top of mind. Since 2014, VR Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) have provided similar capability with a few caveats. Improvements in display and tracking quality have been apparent, and standalone devices that enable a streamlined VR experience have exploded in popularity.

Today, standalone devices are the norm, with some high-fidelity VR headsets still favoring tethering to an external device to enable the highest quality experience at the expense of usability. Most recently, passthrough has become a differentiator—where the real world is brought into the VR headset through outward-facing cameras. This enables a Mixed Reality (MR) experience combining real and virtual, opening unique content opportunities to developers and users.
